SOM REL 404 ~ History of New Thought Final Paper/Project ~ Laura Topper ~ 1 February 2020
Phineas Quimby
Founder of New Thought

Phineas Quinby known as PPQ or Dr Quimby to patients was born 16 February 1802, in Lebanon, New Hampshire, United States and he died: 16 January 1866, Belfast, Maine, United States. This interesting geographical area of America, New England was ‘holy ground’ for Puritanism and also the birth place of the Transcendentalist Movement, which began around 1830 – 1855. Ralph Waldo Emerson, born in Massachusetts in 1803, was a major player in the Transcendentalist movement and forerunner of the New Thought movement, writing his first book Nature in 1836.. Although these two pioneers paths did not cross they are the both considered to have laid solid foundations for the New Thought movement as we know it today today. Quimby and Emerson were born within a year of each other and although they both journeyed their lives in extremely different
ways with Quimby being a master healer and experimental researcher and Emmerson a poet, philosopher, writer and speaker, they individually experienced their own unique spiritual awakenings and epiphanies during their thirtees. With Quimby noted as the founder of New Thought certainly the likes of Emerson, Swedenborg and Charles Mesmer collectively set the stage for this powerful movement to flourish.

The Cultural Influences of The Time
Culture
This was a time of cultural and economic independence and expansion for America and release from Europe. As manufacturing grew and farming became secondary to this, rural American villages were being overtaken into factory complexes and Massetusis became the centre of textile and cotton manufacture in the country. Canals and railroads were being constructed and the first steam boat The Claremont making its debut voyage on the Hudson River in 1807 and as trade routes and economic prosperity opened up opportunities for wealth creation, American ports now were being opened up to trade with the far east and China. This was an expanding time especially with the cultural activist deep desire to end slavery with Lincoln leading the political reform plartform in the 1860s.
Electricity

History of Electricity – Behind the News Video
https://youtu.be/sPJjsE24So8 [1]
The profoundness of the unravelling of electricity must be acknowledged for the physical, spiritual and emotional well being advancement for humanity during the 1800’s. As consciousness expanded to allow for electricity to be bought to use by people such as Benjamin Franklin, Nicoli Tesla and Thomas Eddison, peoples lives were changed beyond recognition both personally and culturally. The invisible was intensely and instantly bought into the visible again for a second time since Sir Isaac Newton published a comprehensive theory of gravity paper in 1687. In consciousness people were opening to the Laws of life and being presented with how these Laws could enable them to live from the mysterious unseen world. Electricity would have been an instigator for people like Quimby to know that there is more to life than meets the eye.

Mind Body Connection
Forerunners to Quimby included 2 men whose work paved the way in consciousness to his discoveries.
Emanuelle Swedenborg, of Swedish descent was an eclectic mix of theologian, professor and philosopher and dynamic influencer of the New Thought movement to this day. Born in 1688, Stockholm, Sweden
Died: 1772, London, Swedenborg was not interested in the ‘’Man message movement machine monument.’’ idea. [2] However he did open the doorway to interpreting the bible from the metaphysical perspective
‘’ He discovered an interior spiritual sense of the bible’ and was a great influence to the Philmores especially with Charles’ Metaphysical Bible authored works. Known to communicate with Spirits he was a great influence in Spiritualism. ‘’ Swedenborg abandoned science to listen to beings he called angels, and stated that the invisible spiritual world had more reality than the visible one. 1 Everything in the visible world had a correspondence to the invisible world, though the material world is a cruder version of the spiritual. The Bible was viewed as being an esoteric book whose words are symbolic of higher truths understood only by the enlightened. 3 Heaven and hell, Swedenborg declared, are states of mind [3]. Although Quimby may not have initially studied or even believed in Swedenborgs work, as Quimby did not enter into Mind Cure from a spiritual or religious perspective, it is said that he did have ‘’ an influence on mental healers such as ‘’Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802–66) and Warren Felt Evans (1817–99), and, later, psychologists such as William James’’ [4]

Anton Mesmer claimed that a universal fluid, animal magnetism, could be manipulated (at first with magnets and then with his hands) to bring about healing in people. 6 Mesmer’s ministrations caused a person to fall into what were apparently hypnotic trances. Interestingly the crossover use of the word magnetism used also in the recent unravellings of electromagnetism in 1820 ‘’When an electron moves, it creates a second field—a magnetic field. When electrons are made to flow in a current through a conductor, such as a piece of metal or a coil of wire, the conductor becomes a temporary magnet—an electromagnet.’’ Mesmer, although not a clairvoyant would use hi powers to connect people in his shows with super natural beings. It was Quimby’s deep interest and curiosity in the magnetic influence of hypnotism, revealed by Anton Mesmer , that led Quimby to the unfoldment of all of his great work.

Illusion and Circus
Another cultural influence of the times was the rise in the art of Circus and Illusionary acts that travelled to entertain and amaze. Of course these are not a Spiritual or Religious influence for Quimby’s deep revelations, however they set the scene for the acceptance of mass public curiosity for all things ‘magical’ and ‘unexplainable’ to the conscious mind. The travelling illusionist and mesmerist was set to wow the audience with acts of showmanship that would leave people astounded with the results. Quimby’s primary introduction to mesmerism was through a presentation in 1838 by a Dr Collier who appeared in Quimby’s home town, giving a presentation of hypnosis that he had been introduced to two years before by the french man Charles Poynan.

Science
’’With the introduction of laboratories in the 1800s, experimentation became an important part of medical research. … Scientists used their experiments and measurements to argue that the human body could be understood in the same way as any other object. ‘’ Science became recognised as a profession and Quimby with his observational, experimental and research orientated mind would have relished in observing and researching the invisible laws of life. The term science was created in 1833 by William Whewell and replaced the older usage of the word philosopher.

Photography

In 1816 Nicéphore Niépce succeeded in photographing images formed in a small camera. Upon his death in 1833 he left his notes to Daguerre. ‘’Daguerre experimented with photographing camera images directly onto a mirror-like silver-surfaced and on 7 January 1839, this first complete practical photographic process was announced at a meeting of the French Academy of Sciences,[26] and the news quickly spread. Known as the daguerreotype process, it was the most common commercial process until the late 1850s’’
[7] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_photography#1816_to_1833:_Ni%C3%A9pce’s_earliest_fixed_images
Interestingly I was guided to research photography and surprised to see the name Daguerre as a founder in the photographic movement. Quimby first named his process of imaging the thought and the ‘disease’ in the patient in what he referred to as the daguerreotype shows that the influence of photography at its grass roots foundation must have impressed Quimby’s healing process.

This is a melting pot of a foundation that would have inspired Quimby to see no shame in professing his new found Mind Cure discoveries and this backdrop surely would have given him permission to fully explore his healing and to experiment with different ways of bringing his discoveries to the public. The mix of these cultural influences and how at that time there was an opening and expansion of consciousness for personal advancement, laid foundation to support Quimby’s explorations.

This extraordinary mix and opening of social, educational, spiritual, creative and medical advancement during this time is completely unique and one that fully fed and supported Quimby to go forwards fearlessly and to use his investigative mind to get to the heart of realising Mind Cure and serving humanity for its highest and best good.

The Challenges
Born into a poor family and son of a blacksmith, one of seven children, with limited education and vocabulary, Quimby lived a humble and simple life and took profession as a watchmaker. He was a deep inquisitive and highly inspired by the working mechanics of things which lead him to a deep curiosity of science and the workings of life and he patented many practical products. In his thirties Quimby contracted consumption/ Tuberculosis with liver and kidney infections and he was forced to give up his work with the anticipation of death. He was not a religious person, he did not live by others opinion and did not believe that he could be cured. It was a friend that told him of a possible cure for this, to ride a horse in the country air at speed. Taking his horse and buggy he did so and through this experience was relieved of consumption immediately, there had been a deep healing.

He became obsessed with how he’d been cured of tuberculosis and he concluded that riding a horse heals Tuberculosis. Being such a curious and inquisitive person he had to understand what had happened and questioned continually how this physical healing took place and accepted that the cause of illness was physical in nature.

Throughout his life Quimby faced the intellectual challenge of unravelling and perfecting the process for healing that could guide others to perfect health. Throughout his healing career in the space of 12 years Quimby sat one on one with over 12,000 patients and guided them to perfect health. With the MInd Cure process that he revealed he and on his continual quest for Truth he guided disease elimination over and over again and like a sponge he took on the energetics of peoples illnesses over and over, this drained and exhausted him as he had not prepared himself for this emotionally, spiritually or physically. Quimby did however partake in distant healing through letter to the patients that were far away or to those whom he was too busy to see at the time and this reduced his workload. ‘’Quimby learned that the mind is not subject to limitations of time or space and, therefore there was a basis for absent treatment. The discovery that healing work could be effective even when the patient and healer were not in the same physical location is one factor that made the healing ministry of Silent Unity possible’’ [8] This exhaustion however was his eventual departure from this plane in life.

Quimbys Major Concepts and Stages of Metamorphosis

I use the word metamorphosis because for me Quimby was on a continual journey of learning, researching, shift and change through his healing development and profession. He was open at the top to the degree that he was consciously willing to be. In the last few years of his life he opened up to Truth and to the knowing of Christ Consciousness and if not for his exhaustion through such prolific healing he possibly could have reached those higher states on the Integral Spiral.
**Also I use the word Patients purely to remain in context with the writings of the time. I personally acknowledge that in a healing scenario the person coming to the session is the client and that.

Mesmerism 1843 – 1847 mesmeric period ~ Public Experimenter.
In 1838 Quimby went to see Dr Collyer demonstrating Mesmerism and he became fascinated on the topic. He taught himself how to perform on himself and on others and he developed a reputation for this and he began working with a man called Lucius Burkmar and together they travelled and initially gave clairvoyant entertainment presentations to audiences and people began asking them to work on their ills. They worked together planting images into peoples minds and in effect reading them. One particular day Quimby realised that the benign herbs that Lucius gave to people for their illnesses actually worked. Quimby questioned this and believed that he could correct peoples erroneous beliefs through his development of Mind Cure and Quimby inadvertently discovered what we now know as the Placebo effect ! It was one day when Lucius detected Quimby’s non working kidneys and he hands on healed him. Through imagery Lucius read Quimby’s mind to know about his kidneys as no one else knew. He had pains caused by kidneys and ulcers on lungs Lucius described Quimby’s pains he diagnosed Quimby of ill health in his kidneys. It agreed with the doctors diagnosis. When Quimby asked Lucius if there was a remedy. Lucius placed hands on Quimby and united his kidneys. Quimby realised for himself that the secret of the cure was BELIEF in what Lucius said. Interestingly Quimby realised that imagination, ideas and imagery are a more prevalent way of creating
new beliefs ‘’mental images are as real to the mind as the actual thing itself ‘’ [9]

Quimby began to feel that doctors were creating the disease in patients as what they believed and told people activated the illness. He then denounced doctors and mediums and spiritualists for planting seeds. Quimby realised that all experience is essentially mental and the body is only the house for the mind to dwell in. ‘ disease is a wrong belief’. He concluded that the thing that makes people sick are the thought atmosphere and pictures that people carry around with them.

Here he parts from Lucius and to develop his own format working on the way healing takes place by changing the deep imagery that someone has within him then healing from there. Through observing and questioning he discovers that by tuning into thought atmosphere of the patient he can see the pictures that make people sick and that a change in image can produce health.

To conclude this period was of great importance to Quimby as it allowed him the time to grow, learn, experiment and deduce as he rejected mesmerism in his mind ant took on the new beliefs of the nature of healing. This period allowed a process to unfold within himself. ‘’ The fact of a gradual mental and spiritual development will be to some the conclusive evidence that they are learning the full ‘true history’ of the discovery of Christian Science’’ [10]

Healing Period 1847-1859 ~ Quimby gives up public mesmerism and perfects and develops healing
Developing his own clairvoyance. ‘’Clairvoyance is a higher state in Jesus the man and in Christ the principle in every man… discovered in the Clairevouyant state. Science means new understanding of the above.’’ [11]

An early Photograph of Quimby in Action
This period was a turning point for Quimby as he came away from public demonstration and mesmerism, he stopped using mesmerism and focused on changing patients beliefs from negative to positive with the use of autosuggestion and imagery in waking state. Referring to man’s opinion as ‘’mere humbug’’and stating that ‘’ if disease was a state of mind, the cause of which existed in a particular form of belief, the patients confidence in the healers suggestion would be sufficient to bring about the cure ‘’ [12] p48 Haller . He called this the Science of Health [13] p 49 Haller and taught patients to ‘think themselves healthy’ guiding them to the errors in their beliefs, however he failed to teach patients self responsibility for healing, he was still acting as the primary ‘healer’ and people came to see him for healing. He created his healing techniques from within the mesmeric framework and when breaking away from this framework he used these terms with their vocabulary as there was no new terminology for the new territory that he was journeying. As a true pioneer in this field of healing Quimby was working with the principle that there was a world of opinion versus that of Science and Wisdom and that a change of mind would change life. He knew that every person has the capacity for higher wisdom, he embraced the light and dark and he denied any use of clairvoyance, Spiritualism and mediumship stating that he believed in the ‘’Spirits of the living ‘’ [14] Haller 50. He used his clairvoyance only to know more about the illness.

Quimby’s method
Using the doctor / patient or the counselling model. Quimby has a method that we don’t see anymore.
He didn’t ask person what their illness was as in the SILENCE he tuned into the persons pain and he intuitively imaged it. For diagnosis He used the silent method… clearing his mind of everything he let the feelings of his patient affect him and he felt their sensations and impressed on his mind a photo image showing the cause of the patients trouble. His wisdom would then explain the trouble and the explanation is the cure. He would then send this “ daguerreotype” photographic image, back to the mind of the patient filled with health and strength .
The patient would not say a word… no words were needed at all.
He went into his clairvoyant state unafraid of the disease He simply held in his mind the perfect image of what the patient should be and the image through Thought transference was impressed upon the patients Mind. Both wills together working in harmony.
He sat with patients silently as he first he made intuitive diagnosis, then he moved onto suggestion NOT through conversation with the patient, but by thought transference. He allowed himself to be receptive to patients feelings it seemed as if he was taking on their troubles.

From there he would discuss the cause of the disease and how the patient fell error to this and how the suffering could be corrected, he convinced the patient of the knowing of Truth and through his auto suggestion he devised the concept Change Your Thinking Change Your Life, however with his approach this definitely needed the ‘healer ‘ to do the work for the patient. The patients feelings would work in sympathy with his own and its shadow was dimmed and the light takes its place and there is nothing left of the disease.

The Constructive Period ~ Religious Development 1859-1866.
‘’One thing is certain: the time will come when the opinions of priests and doctors must give way to the science of life; for their opinions lead to death and misery, and the science of life is health and happiness.’’ Phineas Quimby [15]

In 1859 Quimby moved to Portland and devoted his life to Christ with a possible Spiritual rebirth he developed further his methods and in 1963 he created what is known now as Christian Science. He denied that the workings of Jesus were miracles and said that he too could perform these healings as he believed that Jesus work was also possible for each of us to use. He claimed to have discovered Jesus healing methods and realised how to draw the Divine Wisdom to overcome failed beliefs. This was a turning point for Quimby as now he encouraged that the patient discover their own inner powers and wisdom and use denials for themselves. Using the term Christ Within he professed that the Divine wisdom that Jesus taught “could be found within the individual and serve as a guide to the true interpretation of the Bible” Haller.[16]

As a healer Quimby was constantly evolving in his healing methodology and similarly to Swedenbourg, Quimby claimed his ability to place himself in communication with the inner soul and outer body of a person as he acted as mediator between the two.

This period marks a distinct spiritual embracing for Quimby as he turns to the workings of Jesus and declares that spirit was never sick and never sinned and that there is a Divine part, a christ Consciousness in each of us and that as humans we can learn to live ‘’the way of Christ’’. Once connecting with his knowing of the Scientific Man within as Jesus he then devoted more time to learning about the works of Jesus. He turned to religion, declaring similar truths and he concluded that Jesus’ mission was to treat the sick. Using the term Christ was not exclusive for Jesus the man but to a superior truth that is available to all. .

His focus now in conversation with patients was on their interior world and he awakened them to themselves in what he termed “ The Science of Life and Happiness”. Working with the Spiritual Law he would detect opinions and fears of the patient and he inspired the patient to see and own for themselves a new set of beliefs and self understandings for the cure to be permanent. Quimby realises here that to be truly healed is to know the power of human Mind and that by destroying the old unsupportive beliefs a patient can then see Truth for themselves, this is the same Truth that Christ knew. Quimby goes further here to place religion and medicine to blame for all false beliefs being planted as seeds in the mind of man and therefore the cause of all disease. His work here is centered on the distinguishment of opinion and Spiritual Wisdom. For many of Quimby’s patients they held onto the erroneous beliefs of sin and this is where Quimby denies the use of the Bible, he states that by releasing the concept of sin the patient could free themselves from the burden of the disease. By attaching to Wisdom and the Scientific Man the patient can detach from the erroneous belief and therefore release the disease. He reeducated patients to knowing that all disease is the effect of the punishment of our beliefs we are punished by our beliefs NOT for them. [17]

Quimby did not create a formal teaching methodology for patients to follow or for practitioners to learn. He didn’t consciously use prayer as a tool for healing either. He used himself over and over as the healing vessel and took on thousands of old unsupportive beliefs and energetic patterns. His practice was full and overflowing and he worked an exhausting mission. This I feel may be the phase where Quimby is distinguishing and understanding the knowing and meaning of consciousness, for himself.

Interesting Quimby Notes
’’Quimby was a pioneer and specialist devoted to truth as his own insight lead to it., without regard to pioneer teachings, save those of the New Testament. But it still remains impressively significant that entirely alone in an unfriendly age, he acquired ideas and discovered methods which gave him
title to fame. ‘’ [18]

He shunned organised religion and doctors.
He believed in immortality
He told parables
He believed in Christ and God in everyone
He went against the grain.
He prompted the knowing of the Placebo Effect
He was the original founder of Christian Science
He healed over 12000 patients in 12 years
He wrote papers, and articles and not a book
He developed The Quimby System of Mental Treatment. Or Spiritual Science. / 12 lectures.
His disciples who stayed close were Horation Dresser and Warren Felts
Dresser eventually published these manuscripts …… Manuscripts God and Man…. P 287
He healed and befriended Mary Baker Eddy who eventually left him declaring that she discovered all of his work
He learned to use God’s power to keep a portion of his spirit free.
Quimby passed of exhaustion in 1866

Phineas Quimby and Ernest Holmes

How Quimby impacted/inspired Ernest Holmes.
The main areas where Quimby inspired and impacted Holmes teachings lie in the subtleties of what Quimby was discovering over many years of experimentation. This was not a quick process for Quimby and I believe that there are many unfoldings that would have inspired Ernest on his personal journey of learning. Opinion over wisdom knowing the Truth by going to the deepest wisdom. Proof for Ernest would have been in the number of patients that Quimby saw and healed in such a short span of time. Over this time Quimby matured and opened in his Spiritual awareness and perspective, in a way, to the degree that he knew, he was open at the top to expanding and experimenting in a time where race consciousness and social norm were unaccepting to his ideas and beliefs. This self determination could have impacted Ernest, the will to go on in spite of the common belief system. This could have spurred Ernest to continue with his studies and spiritual detective work as he pieced together for himself the deeper knowing of Truth. They certainly aligned in many ways and yet Ernest took Quimby’s ideas and almost began from where Quimby left off by completely embracing Spirituality, Metaphysics, the teaching of Christ Consciousness and Oneness. Holmes’s intention ‘’was to make it possible for anyone, with any background to practice the healing science of metaphysics … he wanted to separate his work for religion and superstition and embed it in a body of theory and methodology that transcend religious controversy’’ [19] and this Holmes achieved by acceptance of the body rather than denying it, as a part of the healing process.

Holmes pieced together many teachings from many great healers and philosophers and Quimby was a part of that puzzel. Quimby’s use of the word Science and Mind were possibly the inspiration for Holmes’ naming his teaching philosophy The Science of Mind. Holmes knew that this infinite intelligence was not a one time wisdom only available to a few and this came through as the centre point of his teachings and message that he gave ‘’There is a power in this Universe greater than you are, and You can Use It ‘’

Terminology
In writings and quotes Quimby refers to and mentions words including war, fighting, justice, error, enemy, captain, judge, witness and this differs enormously from Holmes writings where there is a greater emphasis on Love, Law, healing, possibility. Quimby was a parabalist, meaning that he used everyday analogies to speak his truth and possibly as the ideas that he was introducing were so new to so many, he felt safer placing them in the context of everyday hardship. Holmes however did not give the disease so much power and chose to focus on loving and accepting all as God as the premise for revealing Truth.

Similarities
Together Quimby and Holmes shared
The knowing that thought and feeling atmosphere create reality
Their beliefs in Christ Within
The unfolding of a Science in the form of Spirituality
The knowing that disease is a culmination of thoughts, feelings and opinion
Their absolute knowing of Truth
The deep desire to serve humanity through their understanding of life
They both acknowledge Christianity to certain degree whereas Quimby denies the use of the Bible, Holmes uses the Bible as a metaphysical interpretation of life
The knowing that we each embrace Spirit within… Holmes took this further teaching people top self heal
Holmes and Quimby both knew that in every seeming challenge there is the ability to dissolve the mental cause pattern.
The knowing that disease is error, however their use of Denial varies …. Where as Quimby would argue down the disease, Holmes understanding that God is everywhere allows for the mental cause of the ‘’disease ‘’ to be acknowledged and transformed in treatment, rather than creating a resistance by not accepting its presence.
The use of imagery and suggestion in their practice.
The both took on the teaching perspective ‘’Change your thinking change your life’’
The knowing that the heart must be involved for healing to take place, Holmes would have realised this to be the subconscious.
The intention to know more … with Holmes this lead him to developing Religious Science and formulating the Teaching Symbol.. Quimby called his teaching into Christian Science

Differences
Quimby was a prolific healer and through experimentation and research on patients he worked his way to his own conclusions
Holmes was a student, researcher speaker and teacher. He pieced together concepts from many avenues and wrote and talked about them, Quimby being one.
Quimby was a loner, he didn’t seek to create a teaching practice and to expand his knowledge through others where as Ernest opened up to teaching others these concepts and expanded his teaching Ministry
Quimby became the sole ‘healer’ he took on the troubles of 1000’s of patients, it is not documented that he had a specific way of preparing himself energetically for taking on these healings. He took responsibility for others wellness where as Holmes primary focus was to teach others to become self aware and self responsible for their thinking atmosphere.
Holmes understood how to use the Creative Law and he inspires others to use it for themselves
Quimby drew on the cultural influences of the time as tools that allowed him to expand his healing modalities
Holmes drew upon the influence of many other teachers as he developed Science of Mind philosophy
Ernest uses prayer Spiritual Mind Treatment, Quimby doesn’t use prayer for healing
Quimby himself uses imagery without teaching others to use this practice, Ernest goes beyond visualisation to the practice of visioning
Ernest was a committed writer and published many books on his knowledge, Quimby didnt purposefully write to publish
Holmes understood consciousness and teaches this to others, Quimby does not mention this at all.
Holmes takes Quimby’s idea of thought transference and opens up to the One Mind, Oneness, Omnipresence, Omniscience and Omnipotence
Holmes is open at the top and inclusive knowing that God is everywhere and working through everything including medicine. Quimby does not acknowledge the power of medicine.
Quimby said the healer can do this Religious Science believes that the person can learn the Truth and do it for themselves.

How Quimby Inspires Me
How does the terminology and writings of the “player” make a difference in my thinking? And How Quimby impacts/inspires you
Quimby’s approach is direct, unapologetic, cutting edge, forthright, unashamed and one of Truth. He took years to come to his conclusions and I wonder if he would have lived longer, what further advancements he would have made within himself. He set the stage for his teachings to be explored further by future teachers and this inspires me to know that once set in motion a thought will continue to expand itself regardless of who the thinker is !

Quimby was a forerunner, a progressive and pioneer in the world of New Thought and metaphysics, single handedly he took on the work of understanding and uncovering the workings of thought, with little formal education and a willingness to get up from every fall, knockback and hardship along the way. He has been regarded as the first in the field of Psychotherapy and his determination to forge ahead, to get to the heart of healing and to create a system for himself that served thousands inspires me to know that the Creative Law works perfectly every time. Breaking through into the new is a process and one that takes strength of will and determination and this Quimby had. From a watchmaker to a renowned healer, he shapeshifted over and over again to match his challenges and he continued fearlessly to get to the heart of the healing process.

Listening in the Silence and working my intuition muscle are practices that I believe are invaluable. Quimby’s use of these practices with his patients is an inspiration for me. All to often in Practitioner sessions it can be felt that there is a need to ‘fill the gap’ by speaking and where I am very inspired is by Quimby’s use of the Silence and his full reliance on his own intuition when with patients. He used his power to intuitively know the patient and he did not rely on words, descriptions or disease labels to bring about healing. He was truly a profound healer.

I admire his commitment to experiment, observe and experiment again and to be willing to continually change and redefine his healing practice. He had no one to bounce off of, no team to discuss things with, no coach to push him on, he simply followed his instinct and listened and proceeded with the intention to use the power of his knowing to heal others. He took on total responsibility for the healing. I question if he fully understood that the healing was coming through him and that as it came through him it could come through others.. Ie his patients. They were not being taught to heal themselves and so he became energetically exhausted. This model becomes obsolete from Mary Baker Eddy onwards. Spirit will assist when we ask.

What spiritual principles do I glean from Quimby?

Patience and faith are principles that really shine through as beacons from Quimby’s process and progress. Ernest speaks the words of Jesus ‘’It is done unto you AS you believe’’ Matthew 9:29 and this is a powerful teaching for me and I understand this belief is not purely referring to human thought it really is referring to belief in the unseen, the invisible and the Truth. As Quimby evolved over time this deeper knowing came through for him in profoundness and he worked with this with his patients. This inspires me to be open to fully living with this knowing, to come back to Spirits love and to place my faith in the unseen over and over.

How may I use the knowledge acquired from this project in my ministry?
The profound realisation that came through me in the midst of my project is that I have the choice to perceive myself as Truth as Love as whole, perfect, complete, healed, health, prosperous and whole in every moment of now. I choose my perception ! This is so powerful and I have known this for years and yet a deeper knowing came to me in my heart from this project.

This project has allowed me to unfold a rich knowledge for myself firstly in the power of intention, Quimby set intention to open up and be used, whether he consciously knew this or not he became available and got his ‘bloated nothingness out of the way’. I read in my research that Quimby was overflowing with patients in his practice, he was not a business man and his intention was to give his knowing to life and this he did, with no expectations other than to be used.

What does this tell me about myself and my ministry ?
This tells me that I am the light of my world, that my intention seeds my life and that my Ministry, however I perceive its physical size, is one that is always expanding. I have the opportunity in each moment to live in the light of Truth. Others are constantly showing me myself and as I practice non judgement over and over I come into alignment with the true meaning of unconditional love. Quimby’s teachings show me again the profoundness in separating the belief from the believer and his teachings are subtelly extremely powerful with their implications and this I am so blessed to have discovered through this paper.
